After completing his collegiate playing days at Southern Connecticut State University, Coach Rod continued his passion for the game as a standout defensive lineman with the Minor League Football Brooklyn Mariners (NY)
Coach Rod started his coaching career in 1992 at his high school alma mater Mount Saint Michael Academy (NY). It was here that he learned his coaching basics and was responsible for OL/DL as well as JV DC. In 1997, an opportunity at the collegiate level opened at Fordham University (NY) under then Head Coach Nick Quartaro. Where better to make a college coaching debut then the home of the legendary Seven Blocks of Granite
In 1998, Roy became the first assistant coach hired at Iona College (NY) by then Head Coach Fred Mariani. Coach Mariani was the offensive line coach at Fordham the year prior. He put a lot on Coach Rod’s plate by making him the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator, Special Teams Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and the liaison for the team’s Managers as well as recruiting responsibilities. “I have a lot to be thankful for with Coach Mariani,” Coach Rod says, “He gave me my first paid college coaching position and it was in a Division I-AA football setting. He’s taught me to be driven and task-oriented on a day-to-day basis.”
After three seasons at Iona College, Coach Rod spent a season coaching with the Roanoke Steam of the Arena Football 2 League in spring of 2001. Later in 2001, he became the Defensive Line Coach at Marist College (NY). Under Head Coach Jim Parady, Coach Rod learned many of his fundamentals on the coaching profession.
In 2004 he moved to Lubbock, TX to coach at Texas Tech University with Mike Leach and worked with the Defensive Line Coach Ruffin McNeil and Offensive Line Coach Bill Bedenbaugh. Had the pleasure to coach former NFL players LB Mike Smith, OL Manny Ramirez, OL Louis Vasquez & WR Danny Amendola.
In 2008 he volunteered with the newly formed Lubbock Renegades of the Arena Football 2 League working with the Offensive and Defensive Lines.
In 2009 he became the Defensive Line/Video Coordinator job at Division II Chowan University (NC).
In 2010 he became the Defensive Coordinator of Milford Academy Prep School (NY) going 11-1. His defenses stats included: giving up only 13 points per game on average. Had 122 TFLs, 33.5 sacks, 61 PBUs 23 INTs, 10 defensive TDs, 14 forced fumbles, with 12 fumble recoveries.
In 2011-2012 he accepted a job at West Virginia Wesleyan College (WV). Responsibilities included Director of Football Operations, Recruiting Coordinator and the one he loved the most Offensive Line Coach. WVWC was pre-season ranked to finish 7th out of 8 teams in their division and by the end of the year they were ranked #11 nationally. The Passing Offense was ranked #1, total offense ranked #13, our QB was ranked #1 in total offensive output. The Offensive Line was the strong hold to make all of these accolades possible. Coach Rod’s favorite saying is, “It’s all won and lost on the Offensive Line.”
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on September 23, 1968 and grew up in the Bronx, NY, Coach Rod is married to the Former Luciana Thrasher of Turkey, TX since 2014, who is a Property Manager in Lubbock, TX and they have 4 girls and a 2 boys, Darcee (26) married to Victor Soto with two daughters (Sydnee 5, Rielee 3), Kennedy (18), Kristi (17), Dancee (17), Chase (14 and 6’2 300 lbs playing OL for the Lubbock-Cooper Pirates) and Dayn (14).
